 Improvements have been
planned to include a new substation on the north end of Saint Peter, the
proposed site is adjacent to the Sunrise Drive Water Tower on city owned
property. A new underground transmission line is scheduled to be installed
starting in August that would link the existing Broadway Substation to the new
Sunrise Substation. A new overhead transmission line is scheduled to be
installed in Nicollet
County Rd
#15 and #40 to connect the substations to the existing transmission line west
of the city. Our electrical provider, Southern Minnesota Municipal Public
Power Agency (SMPPA) is the lead agency and will coordinate the work that is
planned. City staff in conjunction with the underground transmission work
will be installing two sets of conduit in the same trench which will provide
for future electric distribution lines. The contractor will install two
conduits for a fiber communication system between substations for control and
monitoring systems. The contractor will be installing about three and one
half miles of trench, four and one fourth miles of underground transmission
line and two and one third miles of trail. The underground portion of the
project cost is $3.676 million dollars, which will be funded on a shared basis
with SMMPA.
 Underground work will be
completed this fall and the contractor has scheduled the wire to be installed
in the conduit starting April 1, 2011. The new system should be operational by December
2011.
